The 12th was form on June 2nd 1917 as the 12th Aero Squadron and throughout it service career as mostly operated in the reconnaissance role. Later flying RB-26, RB-66 and the RF-4 and now continuing with the RQ-4A Global Hawk with which it has already seen operational service over both Afghanistan and Iraq The 12th Reconnaissance Squadron was reactivated on 8th November 2001 for the RQ-4A Global Hawk( UAV) at Beale AFB and assumed the 12th original emblem of an eagle carrying a bomb. In a ceremony at Dock 6, Monday 3rd April 2006 at 9 a.m., following the official in-activation of the 9th Operations Group Detachment 2. Under the authority of Col. Gregory Kern, 9th OG Commander, Lt. Col. Christopher Jella, former Det. 2 commander and 12th Reconnaissance Squadron Director of Operations, was appointed as commander of the new 18th RS. The 18th RS will take the lineage of the 18th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron which saw service in the European theatre in WWII. It was involved in Normandy and Air Offensive in Europe receiving Citation in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army twice. Deployed to France and later to RAF Upper Heyford with the RF-101 as part of the 66th TRW and later during the Vietnam war flying the RF-4C out of Thailand with the 363rd TRW.The 18th RS will be inactivated on the 24th August 2007.03/04/2006 -- 24/07/2007 |
